Cómo decir «hay» en inglés
La palabra «hay» se traduce de dos formas en inglés: «there is» o «there are» («is» en singular y «are» en plural). Por ejemplo:
- There is a book on the table.
Hay un libro en la mesa. - There are 5 books on the table.
Hay 5 libros en la mesa.
Como usamos el verbo «be» (is, are), seguimos las mismas reglas gramaticales que siempre usamos con este verbo. Es decir, en negativo añadimos la palabra «not» (o su contracción «n’t»):
- There isn’t a book on the table.
No hay un libro en la mesa. - There aren’t any books on the table.
No hay ningún libro en la mesa.
Para preguntas ponemos el verbo «be» al principio:
- Is there a book on the table?
¿Hay un libro en la mesa? - Are there books on the table?
¿Hay libros en la mesa?
Cómo decir «hubo»/»había» en inglés (el pasado)
El pasado de «hay» (hubo/había) se traduce como «there was» o «there were«. Por ejemplo:
- There was a book on the table.
Había un libro en la mesa. - There were 5 books on the table.
Había 5 libros en la mesa.
Cómo decir «habrá» en inglés (el futuro)
Para decir «hay» en el futuro (habrá), se dice «there will be» en inglés:
- There will be a book on the table.
Habrá un libro en la mesa. - There won’t be any books on the table.
No habrá ningún libro en la mesa.

- Hay 3 gatos en la casa.
- No había comida en la cocina.
